So why do some prescriptions have 3 prices?
Private price: This is the price you pay when you have no medicare card or the government does not include the medication on the PBS.
PBS General price: You will pay $29.50 for any prescription on the PBS when you have a medicare card. Some prescriptions may be slightly more if you chose a non Australian brand (Brand price premium). Some medications will be less.
PBS Concession Price: You will pay $4.70 for any prescription on the PBS when you hold a valid concession or veteran affairs card. If you choose a non Australian brand you may have to pay a slight premium.
NB For concession card holders and repatriation customers, once you reach the safetynet -52 prescriptions in any calendar year-you are entitled to free medications (except where you choose a non Australian brand-you will pay a small fee). When shopping just purchase the product at the concession price and we will then refund the full amount (minus any premium if a premium product is chosen).
For general customers once you reach a spend of approximately $900 in any calendar year, you then become entitled to all PBS medications for $4.70 (excluding non Australian brands).
